UAE Expands Humanitarian Efforts in Earthquake-Hit Myanmar

Abu Dhabi: In response to the disaster, the UAE Search and Rescue Team, affiliated with the Abu Dhabi Civil Defense Authority, the General Command of Abu Dhabi Police, the National Guard, and the Joint Operations Command, has continued its humanitarian missions in Myanmar.

The team is actively carrying out rescue operations in six affected locations, working in morning and evening shifts to maximize coverage and speed up response efforts.

A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Myanmar over the past weekend, with its epicenter near Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city.

The earthquake caused massive destruction, leading to the collapse of thousands of buildings and the destruction of roads and bridges across multiple regions. This catastrophe resulted in widespread damage, significant loss of life, and injuries.

Their operations include on-site assessments, searching through rubble, rescuing survivors, and providing logistical and relief support. The team works under challenging conditions and maintains the highest safety standards, while coordinating closely with local authorities and international emergency teams

Brigadier General Salem Abdullah bin Barak Al Dhaheri emphasized that the UAE’s involvement reflects its deeply rooted humanitarian values and commitment to helping those in need. Colonel Muzaffar Mohammed Al Amri, Commander of the UAE Search and Rescue Team, confirmed the team’s operations remain uninterrupted and highly efficient.

As of the latest official statement issued on Thursday, the death toll in Myanmar has risen to 3,085, with 4,715 injured and 341 still missing. Local media, however, suggest the actual numbers may be higher due to communication outages and limited access to several regions.

This natural disaster has compounded an already dire humanitarian situation in Myanmar, where over 3 million people had been displaced and nearly 20 million were in need of aid even before the earthquake. In light of the escalating crisis, the UAE has also established an air bridge to deliver urgent supplies and humanitarian aid to affected areas.
